The Second International Congress of Ethnobiology was held in Kunming, china, from 22-26 October 1990. The Congress was held on the theme: “The Challenges of Ethonobiology in the 21st Century”. About 330 participants, 120 from abroad and 210 from China, participated in the congress, and some 180 papers and posters were presented. In all there were three plenary sessions and fifteen symposia and post presentations on various subjects and aspects of ethnobiology.

The proceedings of the congress were finally published after five years. It covers 120 papers presented at the congress, representing almost all the plenary sessions and symposium organized owing to efforts made by the editorial group. For cohesive reading several sessions have been combined under six major sections. They are: Ethnobiology in Theory and Practice; Traditional Knowledge and Use of Biological Resources; Ethnobiology and Conservation; Biodiversity and Sociocultural Aspects of Ethnobiology.
